Commodore Pedersen joined the Navy as a Rating, conducting Operation Room service from 1985 to 1989 on board the Oslo-class frigates. In 1990, he served as Junior Officer and as a Operations Room Supervisor before he joined the Naval Academy in 1994.
Through various positions on board: Navigator, Communications Officer, Anti Air Warfare Officer, Operations Officer, two years as an Executive Officer on board the Oslo-class and two years as Executive Officer on board the Nansen Class. He served as Executive Officer on board the first Oslo-class frigate that passed through FOST (Flag Officer Sea Training). His First Command was on board HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (FNAN) from August to October 2012.
Service at sea also includes eight NATO deployments, including the counter piracy operation Operation Ocean Shield as Flag Captain at FNAN in 2013. Furthermore he has three participations in Operation Active Endeavour, the last one in 2014 as Flag Captain at HNoMS Thor Heyerdahl (THOR).
Commodore Pedersen has served as the Head of the Norwegian Principle Warfare Officers Course from 2002 to 2004. From 2007 to 2009 he was the Operations Officer at the National Joint Headquarter N3 section and finally he was a staff officer in the Norwegian Frigate Service (Project Officer SNMG 1/OP Ocean Shield) from November 2012 until he was given command of HNoMS Roald Amundsen in May 2013, which was used as the platform to Mission Specific work up for the crew before rejoining as Commanding Officer and Flag Captain of FNAN and THOR in SNMG 1.
In 2015, he became the Chief J 35 at NJHQ. This is a triple hatted position where he as CTF 367 on behalf of the CO NJHQ was responsible for the SUBOPATH function. In addition he served the same function in TASW as CTF 368.
In January 2020, Commodore Pedersen joined Joint Force Command Norfolk (JFCNF) as DCOS OPS.
